Applications

A spine board, also known as a spinal board or backboard, is a rigid patient handling device designed to prevent the movement of the spine during transportation in order to prevent further damage to it. Spinal boards help provide rigid support during movement of a person with suspected spinal or limb injuries. Spine boards are almost always used with a cervical collar with occipital padding, a head immobilizer which acts as side head supports, and straps and tapes to secure the patients to the board.

A cervical collar, also known as a neck brace, is a medical device used to support a person's neck. A cervical collar is also applied by emergency personnel to those who have had traumatic head or neck injuries and can be used to treat chronic medical conditions. Cervical collars are also used therapeutically to help realign the spinal cord and relieve pain.

A head immobilizer enables the transportation of a patient in critical condition during long or uncomfortable journeys by providing a good fixation of the head. A head immobilizer is composed of two head support blocks and a base with belts to fix to various kinds of backboards or stretchers.
